My theories involving Looper are many. The obvious ones being things that a lot of people have bought up. Abe being Kidblue; the southern accent and slight limp they share that I didn’t notice until my 2nd viewing. KidBlue had an undying thirst to impress Abe. Something that was never really explained fully. I look back at who I used to be; my nicknames, my naïveté & my slight narcissism and I feel exactly like Abe looking back at his younger self. Ashamed, embarrassed, wishing I could talk to my you get self & tell myself to wake the fuck up. One thing I did notice was that Abe was handed a similar looking weapon (Gat?) when Old Joe was making his siege on the underground base. Maybe Rian put this in on purpose to feed the fire. My outlook on this theory is that it’s probably true. I see young Abe (Kidblue) fucking up and getting the past end of the business killed. Maybe Abe getting sent back in time to run the Looping business on that end and relive his fuck up over & over was punishment for whatever version of kid blue’s misstep was in the original timeline. Maybe. Onto the next idea. I believe Rian has put in the visual symmetry of both Sarah touching Cid’s foot & the image of Old Joes Asian wife touching his foot as a way of maybe letting us know something. Something I can’t work out quite yet. Maybe one day if I ever get to work with Rian; ill be able to ask candidly about it. My interpretation of the Joe is Cid theory. I think it’s possible. Joe mentions he was sold by his mother for drugs. ‘She was into the party scene.’ Abe also repeatedly says he found Joe when he was young, put a gun in his hand and gave him what was already his…. A foreshadowing maybe that Abe knew a version of Joe was supposed to be the rainmaker? The only thing Joe remembers of his mother Is the way she touches his head. The EXACT way Sarah touches Cid when he hops into bed. Maybe Abe finding Joe at such a young age cause him to never discover his TK abilities? Maybe Joe knows he has TK but is embarrassed by it (he gets very upset with Paul Dano’s character when he uses it for such trivial things). We never see a young version if the Joe in the timeline the film is set. How do we know Abe didn’t find Joe (Cid) then bring him forward in time? It depends on the perimeters of the timelines Rian creates in the film. Can 3 versions of Joe exist in one timeline? I’m not sure. Maybe he sees what happens to Cid if he doesn’t self sacrifice at the end of the film because somehow all the different versions of Joe/Cid are all connected. Remembering that Old Joe saw a flash of a different version of himself with wife & child when he killed the child! Maybe? Just a theory. Something else I noticed was the likeness between Sarah & the hooker young Joe consistently visited. Perhaps a repressed memory? Did young Joe sleep with his mother? Does old Joe lifting his hands when Cid is losing control at the end mean anything? Fighting TK with TK? I can’t wait to discuss this film for years and years to come. It’ll be a constant reference point for my films to come during my career; much the same as Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner has been for thousand over the decades.
